LIHEAP’s Short And Long-Term Benefits

While LIHEAP benefits tend to differ depending on your location, the program works similarly across the country. Short-term benefits of the program include helping to pay for the cooling and heating portions of your utility bill. So, if you use your AC a lot in the summer, you can look forward to that portion of your bill being taken care of by LIHEAP, should you qualify.

Another short-term benefit of LIHEAP is that it can help if your utility bill is past due. If your electricity is at risk of being shut off for nonpayment, LIHEAP can step in to ensure those lights stay on.

As for LIHEAP’s long-term benefits, those come via weatherization. The term refers to making your home energy-efficient, so your electricity usage remains as low as possible. One example of weatherization is properly sealing windows or doors. Another is installing insulation. And if your AC or furnace isn’t functioning, LIHEAP could even help you repair or replace it, so you don’t have to pay out of pocket.

How To Become Eligible For LIHEAP

Everyone cannot enjoy LIHEAP’s benefits, as the program is intended to help those in need. To qualify, you’ll have to pass some eligibility requirements for income, family size, and other factors. To find out the details on LIHEAP eligibility and apply for the program, contact your local office. Do this quickly, as funds for the program are limited.

How To Lower Your Cooling And Heating Costs On Your Own

Since LIHEAP’s funding is limited, you may find that you qualify but don’t receive any benefits.

If so, follow these tips to keep your cooling costs low:

  • Run your ceiling fans counterclockwise in the summer to reduce energy usage.
  • Make sure your AC filters are clean by checking or replacing them once a month so air can flow freely.
  • Close your blinds and curtains when it’s sunny and hot outside.
  • Use exhaust fans when taking a hot shower or cooking in the kitchen to remove warm air that will trigger your AC.

As for your heating costs, here are some tips to keep those low:

  • Set your ceiling fans to run clockwise in the winter so they can redistribute heat properly.
  • If you have one, use a fireplace.
  • During each winter month, clean your heating system’s filter and change it if necessary.
  • Use caulk around windows and doors or weather stripping to keep cold air from entering your home.
