One in five people suffer from mental health issues, but how can you tell when someone might need help? People rarely open up about these issues, and they may not even realize that they’re in trouble in the first place.

The Campaign to Change Direction recognized this problem, and identified five warning signs that someone may be suffering from emotional distress. Here’s what you should look out for.

If someone expresses feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt, this could be a sign that they’re experiencing suicidal thoughts.
