It was founded in the 70’s and has expanded to multiple countries. But if you’re looking to get a Habitat for Humanity home, this information probably isn’t too important to you. - The homes aren’t free. The homeowners, or partners as HFH calls them, are given an affordable mortgage with 0% interest. They are also required to give “sweat equity hours”, which is time helping to build their home or someone else’s.
- Habitat for Humanity doesn’t just build new homes. They also renovate existing buildings and provide disaster response services.
- Applicants are chosen based on their need for housing, ability to pay the mortgage, and willingness to partner.
