Are Monthly Entertainment Expenses Breaking Your Budget?

Entertainment may lift you up when you’re bored, but it can bring you down when expenses spiral out of control. Here are some ways to reduce entertainment costs to keep you within budget.

Entertainment costs are necessary to help you and your family live life to the fullest. If these costs start cutting into necessities like rent, car payments, and utility bills, however, it may be time to cut back a bit.

Obvious expenditures like long-distance family trips often get cut when times get tough. Are they the only costs you must watch, though? Not at all, because smaller monthly expenditures are the ones that can really add up.

Let’s have a look at some monthly entertainment expenses you can trim starting today:

Cut the Cord

Unless you watch every single channel on your TV provider’s lineup, you’re probably overpaying for your cable bill.

The easiest way to cut the cord is to downgrade to basic cable. If you try hard enough, you can find ways to watch your favorite shows online without counting on your cable company to see them.

Regardless of how you reduce your monthly cable bill, know that it’s a reliable way to cut monthly costs. Too much TV watching increases your electric bill. Even television commercials can break your budget by urging you to buy things you don’t need.

Cancel Memberships You Don’t Use

Do you have an ongoing gym membership that you never use? If so, close it out to avoid that unnecessary expense.

Chances are, you have more than one type of club membership like this. Closing one can get you in the mood to close them all, which can lead to substantial monthly savings.

Memberships you use in-person aren’t the only ones you need to close. Any online memberships to websites, magazine or newspaper subscriptions, and the like should be closed as well.

Some memberships and subscriptions could take some work to close. If you don’t feel like doing it yourself, you can use a service like TrueBill to do it for you.

Find Free Entertainment Alternatives

There’s no need to pay for your family’s entertainment when you can find it for free. Get creative, and you’ll realize that paying for cable, Netflix, and other forms of entertainment isn’t necessary.

Here are some examples of entertainment you may be paying for versus its free alternatives:

  • Cable TV may give you plenty of channel options, but you can get most local channels in picture-perfect HD by buying an affordable antenna. In just one month it can pay for itself as you cut cable completely.
  • Instead of paying for a gym membership, turn your home into a gym or use the community option. Some local parks may have outdoor gyms too.
  • Don’t pay for a personal trainer. You can find thousands of expert exercise routines on YouTube without paying a penny.
  • Speaking of YouTube, you can use it to watch movies, documentaries, listen to music, and more at no cost.
  • Do you buy books? There’s no need to when you can check them out from your local library instead. The same holds true for audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and other forms of entertainment.
  • Expensive amusement parks aren’t the only way to experience fun for the entire family. Parks, beaches, lakes, rivers, museums, and other local attractions can provide hours of entertainment at a fraction of the cost.
